A Brooklyn Bridge Proposal

It was Saturday, June 27, 2015.

The weather was unusual for Summer. It was cool and cloudy. I had on a long sleeved dress shirt with leggings and flip flops. Early in the day, I had plans to get a manicure and pedicure at a nearby salon. It was a typical day. My boyfriend and I had plans since the week prior to get something to eat and walk the Brooklyn Bridge. So after my manicure/pedicure, I went home paid some bills, had a light lunch, and started getting ready.

He said he'd be at my house around 3pm. I started getting ready and I was having a major girl moment. I had no idea what to wear. It was cold and it started to rain. I couldn't wear flip flops or flats because my feet would get all wet. I couldn't wear a dress because it was too cold. As I threw clothing around my room, trying to decide what I was going to wear, he calls me saying he's outside. I open the door for him and tell him I'll be done soon. I finally decided on jeans, a black shirt, and my black TOMS. No makeup, no care in the world. The weather was chilly so I brought along a cardigan and even a light jacket. I ran downstairs, grabbed an umbrella and we left. Ironically, it never occurred to me that my boyfriend was a bit overdressed for a rainy day, something I realized much later on.

We headed out to Shake Shack for some burgers. As a couple, we can be simple or extravagant but most of the time we are just two very down to earth people who like to just spend time together. So a typical date night is getting something eat and finding somewhere to just chill. We parked and walked to Shake Shack in Brooklyn. We ordered and there was no where to sit. I was a bit annoyed about that and was a bit moody because of the rain. So I told him we can just eat in the car. We got in the car, ate and started talking. He kept saying so let's park by the bridge so we can walk it.  I was like, "What? You really still want to walk the bridge in this weather? We are going to get soaking wet." He insisted. I said "No, really. Out of all the days you really want to go today." He insisted. After a while I just gave in, but it took him about 20 minutes to get me out of the car. As we started the long walk over the bridge, I just kept asking him why and he kept saying trust me, we won't get wet, and how fun it will be. I kept reminding him we could turn around. I kept asking what we'd do on the other side and how I will need to stop by footlocker to buy a new pair of shoes. LOL! It was actually funny because I did not put together what was going on. The rain got heavier and the wind blew stronger and I was soaking wet. My pants, my shoes, everything. I couldn't believe it. We had one small umbrella so he was way more wet than me.

We reached the first halfway point and he finally said, I guess we could turn around now. I was so happy to head back! Then as we turned around, he pulled out a box, got on one knee and proposed. I was so surprised!!! I was in shock. Four tourists on bikes clapped and out of nowhere popped a videographer and photographer. It was not only a total surprise but one of the best surprises. I've always loved the Brooklyn Bridge and having that memory there will always be a highlight. The fact that it was in the rain added to the uniqueness of the day. Having the photographer and videographer there to capture the very special moment added to it all.

At first, I was not prepared to pose for pictures. I wasn't dressed for it, I didn't have any makeup or anything. But looking back, I loved it! It was natural and it was my now fiance and I in our element. Memories captured doing something we typically do, in our element. Rather than being overdressed and acting. Everything about it was so perfect and I wouldn't change anything.
